About the Author
Candace Knoebel is the award-winning author of Born in Flames-book one in a young adult fantasy trilogy. She discovered in 2009 through lunch breaks and late nights after putting her kids to bed, a world where she could escape the ever-pressing days of an eight to five Purgatory. And an outlet for all the voices residing in her head. Published by 48fourteen in 2012, Born in Flames went on to win Turning the Pages Book of the Year award in February of 2013. In January of 2014, the last book in the trilogy, From the Embers, was released, thusly completing the trilogy. Perfect in every way!!

It seems that Candace Knoebel gets it right every time she writes! I have yet to come across a single flaw in any of her writing, and I am awed every time I pick up one her books, because she has this spellbinding way of drawing her readers in to the adventures she creates.

After reading Everlasting I was thrilled to hop into Jaxen's mind and read this book. I'm a huge Jax fan! In fact, I'm a huge Gramm brothers fan. Gavin and Jax will melt your heart. They did in Everlasting, but after reading this book I love them so much more. Gavin is fun, and seems to be the type of guy who's always smiling. Jax is the brooding type. He holds the weight of the world on his shoulders and is always trying to make everything better for everyone else because hopefully that will take away his problems. The interaction between these to was a beautiful thing to see, and there was no doubt how much they meant to each other. I still love how they settle things with rock-paper-scissors.

It was great to get more of a feel for Jezi in this story. I didn't like her all that much in Everlasting, but my heart broke for her more than once, and this book proved why. Unrequited love has to be one of the hardest things to deal with, but having a curse of death hang over it only makes it that much worse. She was determined in her need to have Jax love her, even knowing what it meant if he did. In fact, each character was so driven by the curse on the Gramm name, that they were desperate enough to take the word of a demon, if only it meant there was a way to lift it. But, who can trust a demon, right?? I certainly wanted to, for everyone's sake, and my heart was in my throat waiting to see if they'd finally be free.

At least, no matter what happened with the spell to break the curse, Jax was finally set free. So was Jezi. Because he was finally able to open up to her completely and admit how he truly felt. It was a bitter sweet moment that changed everything for them. It was also a dark moment that saw all of them, Gavin and Cassie as well, with blood on their hands and nothing to show for it. It shattered my heart because I wanted so much for them.

This book was a thrilling, action-packed read, with plenty of heart ache. It was a great set up for Everlasting, and it explained so much of what was hiding behind those gorgeous eyes of Jaxen Gramm. I loved every second of it!!

Perfect novella! Great addition to the series

I love, love, loved Everlasting, the first book in The Night Watchmen series and all that goes with it. The action, the characters, the magic, and more importantly Jaxen Gramm! *sigh* And when I found out that Candace Knoebel was going to give me a novella from his point of view I felt like running all over town spreading my extreme joy about this momentous news, but the fact that I hate to run left me just squealing and fangirling in the privacy of my very own living room.

And the fangirling didn't stop once I got my very own copy either. In fact it just got worse. This novella gave me everything I wanted, JAXEN! Yes I know I say his name a lot, but trust me when you meet him you will totally understand my obsession and you too will be repeating his name. Jaxen! *shivers* Sorry, on with the review!

The Gramm Curse takes place before Everlasting and actually does an incredible job of filling in everything that happened before we are introduced to Faye Middleton. And boy is it a shocker. When Candace Knoebel wrote The Gramm Curse she wasn't just giving us an insight into Jaxen and what goes on in his head, but she was giving us a true insight into what is going on in the story. This definitely is not one of those novella's that acts as a filler. Oh no, The Gramm Curse is a must read addition to The Night Watchmen series! It gives us answers and gives us so many more questions.

But finally we get to see some of the truth behind Jaxen's stand offish personality and why he pushes people away. I hurt for him in Everlasting, but The Gramm Curse just made me hurt more. I loved Jaxen before, A LOT... but after reading this one, I am even more in love and am ready to admit that I am a Jaxen addict! So, Candace Knoebel can I please have some more???

Candace strikes again - amazing story!

OMG, where to start?! Well, The Gramm Curse is set right before Everlasting. You can read them in the order you’d like, but in a way, The Gramm Curse made me understand Everlasting better, just as Everlasting made me understand The Gramm Curse better. Not making sense, am I? ;-)
As you may know, The Gramm brothers have a curse upon them. If they fall in love, their loved one dies. If they don’t fall in love with their witch…. They die. With me so far? What if you got a remote shot at finding a cure for the curse? What if you got a sliver of chance for reversing it, so nobody had to die? Would you take the chance? How far would you go to try and remove the curse?
That is the dilemma Jax, Gavin, Cassie and Jezi finds themselves in, and the consequences reverberates a long way into Everlasting and beyond.
I loved that The Gramm Curse was from Jax’ POV, it gave a unique insight into his mind, how he thinks. In a way he is a martyr, sacrificing himself for Jezi, so she will live and he will die. In reality, he is running from everything, closing himself behind walls so thick it will take someone very stubborn to crack them – Jezi isn’t the one to do that, but that is another story.
I don’t want to reveal too much about what happens in this book, because if I say too much, I will spoil something from Everlasting. But I love how Candace ties everything together, that we get to see everything from Jax’s POV, the action, the moral dilemma the group is facing, and how their decision affects people around them.
There are deceit, love, hope, crushed dreams, desperation, decisions to make and the fall out to deal with. If you loved Everlasting, the Gramm Curse is definitely for you!

I despise textbooks that have no references in the chapters ...

I despise textbooks that have no references in the chapters or listed at the end of the book. McGrawHill rips off students with the packages they force on campus bookstores. No reputable publisher should offer textbooks without references or some list of sources where the authors obtained their information. Forcing students to purchase on line packages, when there are free on line books seems psychopathic corporate practice.

Diana Palmer ventures into Betty Neels' territory with a hit

Ms. Palmer usually writes about cowboys, millionaires, or private investigators. This time she ventures into the medical field, giving an edge to the type of book that Betty Neels is famous for. And, as usual, she scores a bulls-eye! Although a failure to communicate is behind the misunderstanding between the heroine and hero, it is well-thought out. If I were accused of being responsible for another's death for two long years, I wouldn't be inclined to try once again to tell the truth. Palmer's heroine is broken, both in spirit and body. Her hero must heal himself before he can heal her. Lovely and engrossing, I stayed up all night to finish this book!

Plain and simple, I really enjoyed this book! Having also just received a letter from Ms. Palmer(aka Susan Kyle), I was 'patiently' anticipating her newest release! It was so pleasing to read a slightly different style than she usually writes! The hero is reluctant to reveal his deepest emotions toward his 'Patient Nurse', even to himself! I felt some frustration toward his nurse, as far as clearing her reputation was concerned. On the whole, this is a great read! I couldn't put it down, and would recommend it to anyone who was 'trying' Diana Palmer's work for the first time!

Very detailed

I run an appraisal business and am constantly having to provide estimates for different types of repairs. Once you get used to the format you can provide an estimate that is adjusted to your area and up to date. The CD allows to print or save your estimates so that you may incorporate them into various reports. I would like to see a section similar to RS Means or Swift as for overall construction in the Cost Method is not necessary to give such a detailed cost, a general cost per house category/class and location would be easier.

Some fluff, but mostly good technical information about the legal and tax aspects of running most kinds of businesses.

This is coming from someone who wants to start a blog/online/home business. Let's start with the positive: lots of extra and detailed tax write off information for sole proprietors. I'm using this book mainly to reduce my taxes since I have a relatively high income with high income taxes and this book seems to contain the most detail and various ways I can deduct my taxes. I'm using this book more as a reference than a read thru - which brings me to the negative side of this book . . . it's hard to read chapter by chapter. I feel like there's a lot of fluff, but with a few really good legal/tax points throughout the book.

I don't own or plan to own a brick and mortar business - so a lot of the advice is not for me. I want to keep my operations really small, strictly staying online, collecting no sales tax, and not employing anyone (my main motive in business is to get tax-deductions for following my true passions - something I would do for free and in fact spend and lose money on). If my passions are profitable in some way, then HOORAY! But if not, at least I got tax-deductions doing something I enjoyed. Therefore, I still meet the criteria for my intention to make a profit. But as we all know, profit is not guaranteed in any and every business.

The getting started chapter goes over business types (service, retail, manufacturing), business success info and advice, business location (mall, home, rural, industrial, zoning), financing (business loan types, grants, raising capital), legal structures (sole proprietor, LLC, etc.), legality of business names and trademarks, licensing permits, and liability insurance. I never plan to go in debt for business unless expansion would guarantee massive profits - in this case taking a loan is justifiable. I want to keep my liabilities naturally low and stay smart about risk to avoid buying insurance and avoid any catastrophes. Besides info about business names and trademarks, this chapter was a wash for me.

I hate the bookkeeping chapter because it's too complicated. I was hoping for a simple and easy solution to keep track of everything. But there are a few useful tips and pointers if you're willing to dig through all the words.

The growing up chapter explained the details in hiring employees and solidified my opinion that hiring employees is never worth it and if I were to ever hire, I would use contractors.

The taxes chapter is the main reason I bought the book and it didn't disappoint - the gold is here. Unfortunately for me (but fortunately for you?), I just found out he wrote a different book that only covers tax deductions - had I known this, I would have bought that book. I'll probably check it out at the library. I advise you to look into it too if you're like me. There are so many deductions that are explained, I'm glad that I bought this book so that I don't have to hire someone to tell me and do my taxes for me. LOTS of tax intricacies I never even guessed existed were explained. Now I can and will deduct things confidently.

The home business chapter is my second favorite since it also has tax-specific advice about home business.

The only things in the last chapters which caught my eye are the legal aspects of publishing and trademarks. Also talks about websites and the internet.

This is a great book for people who already have a pretty solid traditional small business and hope to improve upon it by expanding their business through expanding sales and hiring employees. It does have good nuggets for sole proprietors as well. Taxes are a headache, reading this book is a headache - but that is mostly because taxes are a complicated issue for most laypeople trying to start a business.

The author interjects some great insight and humor throughout. It's down-to-earth, easy to understand and follow. Do yourself a favor and get this book - you won't be disappointed.

Very pleased with our purchase

We purchased this book for my husband's friend and co-worker that is a welder who is interested in possibly branching out and starting his own business. The reviews appeared to be mixed on this book so I was a little hesitant to place the order, but per the description the book seemed to contain everything that we were looking for. Once the book arrived I flipped through and read a few snippets and to me, someone who is not a welder but does have a great deal of background in small business, the book seemed to give sound advice. We gave this to my husband's friend a few days ago and he was thrilled with the gift. Introduction

Vivid memories of kids are indelibly on my mind for ever. In 1984, while I was working for a year in Murree, a Himalayan hillstation school, two children called Fatima and Raazia would smile at me deliciously during break, calling "Miss Lizzie!" with thick bread wads in one hand and hot buffalo milk in the other. Visiting them at night, they would jump inexhaustibly up and down like frogs on their thick woven razais, duvets made of mountain sheep's wool. For those two faces in the Pakistan Himalayas I dedicate this book, wherever they may be now, and to my nephew and niece, Ben and Philippa.

My second memory: sitting by a lake bursting with white lilies in Kodikanal, another hillstation in Tamil Nadu, Southern India. An echo of growing laughter brought with it a bunch of wild kids on the end of huge pogo sticks cut from trees, twice their size, arriving boisterously at the lake's edge in great leaps. Here they began to plop, giggling their unbottled laughter into the water, watching me now and then. After several minutes of play and mischievously pointed nods, they drew closer, wading through the lilies. One by one each child climbed out of the water, dragging behind them garlands of sopping wet flowers. As I watched silently, they began to lay garland upon garland of lilies, which they had threaded together in the water bed of the lake, around my neck. Dumbstruck in wet honor by this adornment, I basked in their wide-eyed smiles as they pogoed away, left speechless by these kids who make wet joy from nature.

Steve Biddulph, in his book The Secret of Happy Children, tells the story of a Swiss doctor who compared two World War II orphanages in Europe. One was a Western field hospital, with ample provisions and nurse care, and the other a remote mountain village with minimal but adequate provisions, staffed by local villagers and surrounded by kids, dogs and goats. His observation was that the babies in the field hospital had everything material, but little in the way of affection, touch and stimulation, whereas those in the villages had only basic care, but masses of hugs and affection -- and it was these babies that were thriving. The doctor deduced that children need three important requirements: frequent touch, movement (rocking, carrying, bouncing); and eye contact (smiling and a colorful environment).

Twenty-first century kids have to contend with growing up in a crazy-paced world, with the stresses of busy parents and home life, coupled with raging hormones and in-your-face media and advertising. Schooling may be competitive, and it is no surprise that children become stressed, as adults do. Drawing on the techniques of yoga can empower children, as well as adults, with tools to handle stress, moods and anxieties and can provide time-outs to cultivate self-awareness, confidence and calm amid the "moving sea of chaos" (which yogis call samsara). Being the daughter of a priest, I feel a strong need to find those positive meeting points that link people of all cultures and religions, and I find that yoga provides a universal language that can help an individual deepen their personal spirituality, philosophy or sense of meaning. Essentially, yoga cultivates a childlike mind, untainted by conditioning, keeping the garden of Eden open.

I like this book: the photos are great, getting into and getting out of the poses are clearly written, and I like the added things to think about while doing some poses. As an instructor, I've used several things from this book.

In order to find consistent alphas and outperform the market, investors must "think outside the benchmark" in the construction of their portfolios—without taking on too much risk. Active 130/30 extensions, says Leibowitz, can provide the solution. With the growth in active extension (AE) funds over the last few years, the lines have been blurred between traditional equity and what is considered alternative equity. The basic motivation behind the active extension initiative has been the desire for more alpha return without taking on directional leverage or moving too far from traditional equity management.

With its beta-one equity risk, its 100% net long base, and its clearly delineated alphas, AE can be viewed as an "incremental" expansion of standard long-only active equity. Indeed, it is these familiar and comfortable features that enable AE strategies to be kept within the basic equity allocation rather than being thrust into the generally smaller allocation dedicated to "alternatives." In addition, 130/30 products have brought transparency into the world of long/short investing, introducing another way to improve governance in the asset management industry.

In Modern Portfolio Management, Leibowitz and his coauthors offer new strategies for institutional investors who want to manage their portfolios more actively by using 130/30 investment techniques. The 130/30 framework is a natural extension of the basic long-only benchmark-relative strategy that is so widely practiced. This approach seeks to exploit the opportunities that exist between the more efficient long only market and the less efficient short market. About the Author
MARTIN L. LEIBOWITZ is Managing Director on the U.S. Equity Strategy team at Morgan Stanley. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 2004, he was vice chairman and chief investment officer of TIAA-CREF. Leibowitz is a leading authority in the fields of security analysis and overall portfolio allocation strategies. He is the author of four books, including Franchise Value (Wiley), and 138 articles, ten of which have won the prestigious Graham and Dodd Award for excellence in financial writing. Leibowitz serves on a number of endowment and foundation investment committees, including Harvard University, University of Chicago, Rockefeller Foundation, Carnegie Corporation, and the Institute for Advanced Study.

SIMON EMRICH is Head of Quantitative and Derivative Strategies North America at Morgan Stanley. Most recently, he has worked on issues related to alpha-beta separation and the optimization of alpha views in a benchmark-relative portfolio context, as well as on the implications of the quant meltdown during the second half of 2007. The fifteenth of thirty-six children, Sattareh Farman Farmaian was born in Iran in 1921 to a wealthy and powerful shazdeh, or prince, and spent a happy childhood in her father's Tehran harem. As founder in 1958 of the Tehran School of Social Work, Sattareh naively believed, "If one only avoided politics, one could achieve something constructive." After two decades of humanitarian efforts in Iranian family planning, day care, vocational programs and aid to the poor and prisoners' families, she was arrested in 1979 by Khomeini's machine-gun-toting teenage minions. Branded an "imperialist," she narrowly escaped execution and now lives in the U.S. The 15th of 36 children, Sattareh revered and feared her "all-powerful" father, a prince and governor. This dramatic if restrained autobiography, written with freelancer Munker, describes her patriarchal upbringing and her education at UCLA. She belatedly realized that "keeping our mouths shut let the Shah do what he wanted." Her memoir is actually most effective as a political document. She powerfully condemns the Eisenhower-backed coup that toppled democratic premier Mossadegh and installed ruthless dicatator Reza Shah Pahlavi, whose fascist secret police were trained and financed by the CIA. The Shah's corrupt, unjust regime, she graphically demonstrates, fueled explosive resentment that found an outlet in Khomeini's fanaticism.

In this poignant autobiography, Farman Farmaian brings Persian history and culture alive. Born in 1921 into the powerful, aristocratic Qajar family, her life spans nearly a century of tremendous change in Iran: from a sheltered childhood in her father's harem (there was an extended family of four wives and over 30 children) through her studies at the University of Southern California where she was the first Iranian student to attend to her return to Iran to found and direct the Tehran School of Social Work from 1958 until 1979 when radical students took over the school and forced her into exile. Intertwined with her personal account is the political history of Iran from the constitutional monarchy of the Qajars through the Western-oriented but brutal Reza Khan and his son Reza Shah to the virulent anti-Western Islamic Republic of Ayatollah Khomeini. This is also a cultural history of a highly adaptable people who learned centuries ago--in order to survive--to trust no one outside one's own family. Highly recommended for all libraries.

An exotic, absorbing, rather odd life saga played out against the volatile politics of Iran. ``Dispossessed of her Persian heritage,'' Farmaian (b. 1921) fondly recalls her harem childhood as the 15th of 36 children, the third-born to her 16-year-old mother, who was the third of her father's eight wives. Here, the author idealizes her father for his ability to recollect his children's names on Friday inspections and for teaching them to be ``obedient'' and grateful, to value education and service, and ``never to accept a bribe.'' Discouraged--as a woman she had ``no value''--from pursuing her own education, Farmaian nonetheless went to America in 1943, where she acquired a master's in social work, an Indian husband who abandoned her, and a daughter who, to her great consternation, was an American citizen. Returning to Iran in 1954, she began, with the Shah's approval, her school of social work, all the while condemning the US government for supporting the Shah, whose corruption she especially denounces here with her own particular form of snobbery: the Shah, she says, made people rich ``whose fathers no one had ever heard of.'' But Farmaian objects equally to the Khomeini revolution, its excesses and injustices: her recounting of her arrest, her defiant response to her interrogators, and her escape is the best reading in the book. Throughout, many of Farmaian's attitudes no doubt will offend the ``American friends'' for whom, along with her grandchildren, she says she is writing, in order to warn them against ``well-meaning efforts to remake the world in their image.'' Rejecting Western democracy, the constitutional monarchy of the Shah, and the religious state of the Ayatollah, the author seems to prefer the landed aristocracy of her father. A seemingly naive but fascinating psychological document, then, with occasional lyric moments: ``My country is a kingdom of fire, a carpet of sand and stone.'' The Tender Revelation of a Remarkable Life

Monument to a charming woman's tenacity and common sense, this exceptionally enjoyable book also reveals a way of life, the customs and the transformations taking place in one of the world's most interesting and least known countries. Iran's fascinating modern history, from the Qajar period up to the Islamic revolution of 1979, is revealed here, in a most readable presentation.

Nice, but needlessly detailed

It's a good book, with a "supposedly" neutral view on modern Iranian history. It's the story of a strong, very determined Iranian woman, who overcomes all obstacles to achieve her goal. Wanting to help better her society, she becomes a social worker. It's interesting how things worked out well for her at first - and according to the book, her efforts did actually improve the situation of the poor in Iran - but the betrayal of some "greedy" students brought the profession to an end with the outbreak of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

This book presents one of the many perspectives of the "Iranians in diaspora".
