About the Author
Gerard Voland has taught design for 20 years and pioneered an innovative, nationally recognized freshman design course at Northeastern University. In 1994 he was named the George A. Snell Professor of Engineering in appreciation for his work with this freshman design course and with engineering curriculum reform at Northeastern. He is also the author of textbooks on engineering graphics and control systems modeling. He lives in in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, with his wife, Margaret Voland, a mathematician who researched and developed the case problems in this book.

Rationale for the Text

Engineering by Design is intended to serve a multiplicity of functions while conveying the excitement and sheer fun of solving technical problems in creative yet practical ways. It provides an introduction to the engineering profession through numerous case histories that illustrate various aspects of the design process. This is important because students can come to appreciate the interdisciplinary aspects of engineering problem solving as they work with case problems or review case histories in design which demonstrate (sometimes in a very startling but effective manner) valuable lessons in engineering practice.

Many engineering colleges are continuing to revise their curricula in response to the ABET 2000 accreditation requirements. Various design and manufacturing topics are being integrated more into undergraduate engineering programs, and new mechanisms for delivering this course material are being developed with a general focus upon experiential learning by undergraduates. Engineering by Design has been developed as an aid for these important efforts. It is written in a way that I hope will be both engaging and accessible to students while maintaining the accuracy and rigor that one would expect of an engineering textbook.

Freshmen and sophomores often have little substantive knowledge of professional engineering practice; indeed, these students may have many misconceptions about the actual work that engineers perform and the types of problems with which they wrestle. The initial chapters and case histories of this book will give students a limited but informed understanding of the engineering profession. Later material (including case problems through which students can apply their newly acquired knowledge of design) then broadens and deepens this understanding, and this material can be used in a wide variety of courses including senior capstone project classes. A list of appropriate courses is given later in this preface.

Through this approach, students discover the need to

• formulate problems correctly
• work successfully in interdisciplinary teams
• develop their creativity, imagination, and analytical skills
• make informed ethical decisions
• hone their written and oral communication skills

Most important, they learn that engineering is a service profession, dedicated to satisfying humanity's needs through responsible, methodical, and creative problem solving.

This second edition of Engineering by Design includes expanded coverage of several important topics, including teamwork skills and tools, Gantt charts, problem formulation strategies, engineering graphics and sketching, and creativity stimulation techniques. Moreover, numerous additional case histories have been incorporated into the text.

Structure Case Histories

Engineering By Design introduces students to such critical design topics as needs assessment, problem formulation, modeling, patents, abstraction and synthesis, economic analysis, product liability, ergonomics, engineering ethics, hazards analysis, design for X, materials selection, and manufacturing processes. The engineering design process provides the skeletal structure for the text, around which are wrapped numerous case histories that illustrate both successes and failures in engineering design.

According to Larry Richards, Director of the Center for Computer Aided Engineering at the University of Virginia, engineering cases generally fall into one of three categories. They are case studies, case histories, and case problems. A case study presents an ideal or benchmark solution that may serve as a model for future work. In contrast, a case history describes how a problem was solved, and points out the consequences of the decisions that were made. This text contains numerous case histories; the more extensive ones have been collected at the end of each chapter so that they will not interrupt the flow of material in the chapters. Each case history has been selected to illustrate a particular principle, procedure, or lesson in the text. Students and faculty can use these case histories as important resources for study, reflection, and discussion.

Design Project Assignment Template

The text ends with a unique Design Project Assignment Template (immediately following Chapter 11) that the instructor can use to select and assign tasks to students who are working on a design project. With this template, instructors can directly correlate their students' efforts on a project with appropriate material from each chapter of this text. Of course, not all assignments need to be performed; the template provides a "menu" from which instructors can select tasks and topics that they wish to emphasize.

This template also provides an abbreviated summary of the text with key concepts highlighted in bold type. Students can use this template to review and correlate the critical elements of the design process as they develop an overall perspective of the material presented throughout the text. If a term or concept in the template is not understood completely, the student should recognize that lack of understanding or comfort with the concept as a warning flag. The student should then return to the (referenced) section in the text in which the concept is discussed and study further. Through such efforts, the template can serve as an important learning aid. A sample section of the design template is shown in Figure P.1

Case Problems

Finally, a case problem sets forth an open-ended (perhaps unsolved) situation that leaves the solution up to the reader. It can be a learning module designed to put students to work in teams to define the problem and solve it through research, discussion, and/or lab work. Four extended case problems have been prepared for use as active learning modules; they follow the Design Project Assignment Template. Each of these case problems contains a substantial amount of background information, as well as proposed or existing solutions, so that students will be able to "hit the ground running" if any of these problems is chosen for a design project.

Moreover, these case problem modules serve as examples of the depth, breadth, and type of information that one should acquire about a technical problem before embarking upon the development of a design solution. The background material in each problem provides sufficient information to understand the general parameters and factors that must be considered during a design effort; however, students should seek additional information beyond that contained in the case problems.

Immediately following the four case problems is a list of 50 case problem topics, which describe situations that call for engineering design solutions. Since these descriptions are very brief, students will need to research the background and current status of each situation. Again, the four extended case problem modules described above can serve as examples of the type of background data that should be collected via such research.

Informative book for class

If you are taking an engineering design class or working on an engineering design project then this book is helpful and informative. There are a lot of relevant case studies and design processes outlined that can be useful as you consider the important components of your design. So far my design group has used some of the procedures in the book to help clarify primary design goals and specifications we need to consider as we begin to plan our design. If you are just looking for a fun and interesting read about engineering design, then this probably is not the right book for you though.

I needed this book for class and ordered it fairly lst minute. It arrived promtly and although it was not in the pristine condition that "very good" condition books often are, the price was low and I am pleased.

A Must Have Guide for any Marriage Mentoring Program

As a Marriage Mentor, I feel that the materials are well thought out, easy to work with and are clear and concise. The guide is the perfect road map for helping couples as the approach their upcoming marriage. It is amazing how open and honest couples can be while working through the work book. The "Together Forever" guide book for mentors is a must have for anyone who is mentoring couples. My husband and I have so enjoyed using the guide and have helped couples and in doing so have improved our own marriage.

Together Forever is a wonderful resource for engaged couples to use along with a mentor couple to prepare for a lifelong Christian marriage. The Mentor's guide has practical insight to guide a mentor couple. My husband and I have used the curriculum several times as we mentor engaged couples.

Christine writes like she lives. It's an invitation to believe that God has something big in the kingdom marked with your name, and how to run after it with faith and focus. If you don't want your life interrupted or you long for faith that keeps you comfortable rather than called, than it's probably not the book for you. But if you are seriously hungry to run the race you were born to run, pick up this book.

I think this book gives so much inspiration whether you are new to christian faith or old to christian faith. Christine Caine always knows how to get people fired up about Jesus. It makes you realize how much more you can do if you trust fully, and live for Jesus. I recommend this highly if you feel stuck and lost as if you have nowhere to go. It might just give you a kick in the butt you have been needing or wanting.

First I must say that I do not normally choose memoirs. This book's title caught my eye but it was the writing and the story that captured my interest. Love addiction isn't something you hear about but domestic abuse is. The story is one which every woman should read, even if you don't think you've been in the author's position. It's a heartfelt, honest look at her past which will keep you reading to the very last page.

About the Author

Mike J. Stabler is Senior Research Fellow at the University of Reading; his principal research has been on the environmental impacts of economic activity focusing on the tourism sector, published in journals and books. He was joint author of the original edition of this book.

Andreas Papatheodorou is Assistant Professor at the University of the Aegean, Greece, and Honorary Research Fellow at the Nottingham University Business School, UK. His tourism research focuses on competition, pricing and corporate strategy in air transport, cruising and travel distribution and has been published in international academic journals.

Prior to her death in 2006, Professor M. Thea Sinclair was Director of the Tourism and Travel Research Institute (TTRI) in the Business School of the University of Nottingham.

The second edition of Economics of Tourism is a welcome update to a classic text. The authors provide as complete a review on the subject as can be found anywhere. This is an outstanding guide to an under appreciated and under studied area of economics.

They also reinterpreted older aesthetic concepts in light of twentieth-century mentalities. While modern ideas captured the imagination of some Japanese writers, the example of classical Chinese poetry remained important for others. Meiji writers continued to compose poetry in classical Chinese and adhere to a Confucian system of thought. Another factor in shaping modern Japanese literature was the example of foreign works, which offered new literary inspiration and opportunities for Japanese readers and writers.

Divided into four chapters, the anthology begins with the early modern texts of the 1870s, continues with works written during the years of social change preceding World War I and the innovative writing of the interwar period, and concludes with texts from World War II. Each chapter includes a helpful critical introduction, situating the works within their literary, political, and cultural contexts. Additionally, there are biographical introductions for each writer.

This is a rich and comprehensive anthology of modern Japanese literature that includes not only the finest samples of poetry, drama and prose fiction but what are often considered marginal such as political accounts and detective stories. Almost completely isolated from the rest of the world at its beginning, poets and writers in Japan since the late 1860s have swung back and forth between the indigenous tradition and the newly imported forms and styles in every type of writing. From Soseki, Tanizaki, and Kawabata to authors translated here for the first time, they have each in his or her own way attempted to transmit to the readers degrees of their enthusiasm or reservations concerning imports from the West. They have created a kind of experimental laboratory thattests the universal validity of romanticism and naturalism, the idea of the individual and society, the rhetoric ofautobiographical confession, the debate over socialist realism, the role of art as memory, the poetics of gender and feminism, and so forth. This anthology provides the results of those experiments, showing an immense variety of literary scenes that illustrate stages of modernization in Japan.

Was it just me or did the author over do it with the exclamations. I mean almost every other sentence ended in an exclamation mark. I still enjoyed the story!!!!!!

About the Author
Graham Scarr is a chartered biologist and osteopath with a particular interest in structural mechanics. Fascinated by the numerous examples of geometric patterns and shapes in nature, he has been researching their significance over many years. As a graduate in microbiology, and after spending several years developing his skills in a bacteriological research lab, he is now part of a specific interest group looking at the significance of the biotensegrity concept to biomechanics and clinical practice, and at the forefront of current thinking about this subject. Working closely with Stephen Levin, an orthopaedic surgeon who first recognized the importance of biotensegrity to living organisms, he has developed new models that progress our understanding of the structure-function relationship in biology. Graham Scarr is currently a Fellow of the Linnean Society and Member of the Society of Biology; he has published several papers on this subject in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Excellent book on this increasingly-accepted theory of biologic structure

I have been following the scientific theory of biotensegrity for several years now and I am co-founder of the first BIG (Biotensegrity Interest Group) in the US.

Graham Scarr's is the first book ever on Dr. Stephen M. Levin's theory of tensegrity in biology -- "biotensegrity," and Dr. Levin wrote the forward, endorsing Scarr's work as an accurate presentation of his theory, which was first conceived by Levin in 1975, after a multi-year search for the architectural principles of biomechanics.

Essential for anyone who is looking for an accurate foundation in this emerging field of science, Scarr takes us through the fundamentals step-by-step, making a complex theory accessible without diluting it, and illuminating biotensegrity theory as that of the structure of the hierarchical, evolutionary and developmental continuum of biologic life, and not merely metaphor,

Endoskeletal tensegrity icosahedrons, the foundational seed structure of the biotensegrity model, have properties and behaviors that we are quite unused to, outside of nature, and the structural model was not available to us until Kenneth Snelson realized it in the middle of the last century. Because of this, structural biology has traditionally been built on machine models, an unexamined fundamental assumption which results in who-knows-how-many inaccurate and unrealistic conclusions, many of them medical. An example of this would be the billions of dollars spent annually in the US alone on spinal fusions, which are rationalized on the assumption that we are more stable when we our moving parts are _less_ mobile and flexible, like a building or a machine. Think of it: if that were true, as we age and stiffen and become less flexible we would become more stable and fall less--not exactly the case. Do you see the problem here?

I look forward to the day when this theory becomes understood on a more widespread basis, because all medical procedures which are founded on a machine model of the body (as opposed to the biotensegrity model) will have to be reviewed and, I expect, will be improved accordingly.

Scarr's book is concise and very well illustrated, with many models built by the author. You really have to build these things yourself, or at least get one in your hands to understand the almost shocking properties of tensegrity structures. Enjoyable and informative read

This book offers an excellent overview of Tensegrity as it applies to biological systems. It is very easy to digest, and has clarified some questions on the history of this subject, as well as gifted me with new insights as to how to apply the model to Manual Therapy.

The subject of BioTensegrity is not an easy concept to grasp

This book is the first on the topic of BioTensegrity. It therefore marks a historical development in our understanding of biomechanics. The subject of BioTensegrity is not an easy concept to grasp, that is, until one understands the fundamentals. At this stage there is a eureka moment where Levin’s BioTensegrity model becomes blaringly obvious having beautifully evolved.
While Scarr’s knowledge is formidable his pitch-perfect prose builds this text in true tensegrity style. There is oxygen in every sentence. Scarr has sculpted an easy to read, easily comprehensible book for everyone with an interest in living movement.

The importance of BioTensegrity in enhancing our knowledge of biological structures cannot be understated and cries out for critical investigation. For example, Scarr takes classical mechanics to task in chapter 4 with a convincing argument demonstrating that biology is not constrained by the laws of classical mechanics. Levin’s four bar closed chain kinematic explanation is poetry in motion. The time is ripe for a new vision and new explanation for the construct and movement ability of biological systems. A third class lever would be all that is required to catapult the long held laws of mechanics to a distant past when mankind did not appreciate that inanimate objects are not comparable to living organisms.

I suggest that this book is not one the reader will digest in one sitting. Smaller more digestable portions are recommended. Therein lies additional value in purchasing the book. I believe this historical text will become an important source of reference with the need to return to specific points or chapters time and again. As the readers knowledge of the topic grows a return for another read with fresh eyes and a more appreciable understanding will result in new interpretations of the material.

I am delighted to give this book my highest recommendation.
