About the Author

Ahindra Nag, Ph.D., is a Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He has three years industrial and twenty one years of teaching experience and has published seventy research papers in major national and international journals and has guided six PhD students. He was invited as a Visting Professor in Academia Sinica (Taiwan), University of Campabasso( Italy ) and Universidad de Córdoba( Spain). About the Author
Stanley B. Lippman has retired back to the Catalina Foothills where he is working on EEEK!, a computational model of the nervous system of the House Mouse, and An Off By One Error, a speculative novel set in the Northwestern Rain Forest. During his professional career, Stanley served as Distinguished Consultant for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Architect for the Visual C++ development group at Microsoft, member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories, two stints in Massive Multiplayer Online Gaming, and a surprisingly long stint in Feature Animation at Disney, DreamWorks, Pixar, and PDI. Stanley will be most remembered for his many years working with Dr. Stroustrup on the implementation of cfront, the standard implementation of C++ until the ISO standard.

 

Josée Lajoie, now at Pixar, was a member of IBM Canada’s C/C++ compiler development team, and chaired the core language working group for the original ANSI/ISO C++ standardization committee.

 

Barbara E. Moo has nearly thirty years of software experience. During her fifteen years at AT&T, she worked closely with C++ inventor Bjarne Stroustrup and managed the C++ development team for several years.

Another keeper in my shelf. It covers C++11 standards very well.

C++ Primer, 5th ed. is a great book for an intermediate level C++ programmer. I would NOT recommend this book to a novice, but if you went through an introductory book or two and have some basic programming experience, this book will take you to the next level.

The authors introduce STL material from the beginning. So, this book more or less shares pedagogical philosophy with another excellent introductory book "Accelerated C++" by Koenig & Moo (who is a co-author of this book). IMO, this is a superior approach, compared to a more traditional, part1-C-part2-C++ type of approach.

What I like about this book, in particular, is the authors' attention to detail and their pursuit of "completeness". Not only does the book cover all the basic building blocks of the language, it also describes subtleties and nuances in the language that can easily be missed or misunderstood by showing you lots of easy-to-understand examples. In this sense, I would say that this book contains most of the materials covered in topical books such as "Effective C++: 55 ways..." by S. Meyers. Althought Meyers' book is a decent one on its own, I feel like you wouldn't really need to read Meyers' book if you go through this book patiently.

Well, what I described so far doesn't differ much from what you can find in other reviews for the previous editions. However, newly added materal on the new C++11 extension certainly justifies new edition. The authors give clear explantion of new addtions (such as auto type, decltype, list initialization, rvalue reference, move operator, lambda expression, shared/unique pointers, just to name a few). These new materials are repeatedly used throughout the book, so you will feel very comfortable with these by the time you finish the book. This C++11 extension alone, in my opinion, justifies the price of the book.

The book is in its fifth edition, and this shows in the book's clean, organic structure. Fonts and spaces are perfect for a programming book, and cross referencing is very nicely documented so that you can remind yourself of your previous reading 2 weeks ago. Examples are succint and easy to understand, although they tend to be independent snippets of codes rather than parts of a grand scheme.

All in all, this is a great intermediate level book on C++. It is the kind of book that you want to keep in your shelf as a reference. I highly recommend this book to those who want to learn C++.

Great book for programmers

The C++ programming language is big, powerful and painful to master. But it's a wonderful language, both for industrial and academic use. The "C++ Primer, 5th Edition" is exactly the same. It is a big book, with a lot of information which is not always easily presented. But it's a good book and it appeals to a lot of programmers.

The "C++ Primer, 5th Edition" is not a book for those who just started programming. It is for those people that know the basics of programming and wish to learn how to program C++ the way it's supposed to be. The language is presented in depth, along with all the new features that come with its latest ISO standard, C++11.

Object Oriented Programming principles and practice, Generic Programming, Containers, dynamic memory and advanced type support are also all there. Everything is presented in a clear way with a lot of examples and several exercises to get you started.

What I liked:

1) The summary of "Defined Terms" at the end of each chapter is a very handful guide on what was presented in the chapter and it greatly assists in both remembering what the chapter was about and as a quick reference.

2) The book builds slowly on each concept; object oriented programming and generic programming are reintroduced multiple times in different depths.

What I did not like:

1) No mention of threads, atomic instructions, memory model or anything remotely close to any of those. This was one of the biggest additions in C++, at the very least an honorary mention should have existed.

2) Template metaprogramming is only mentioned once. Yes, it is a difficult subject that few people pursue and even fewer master. But it is an integral part of C++ that will become more and more common in the future. It requires at least its own paragraph or appendix to very briefly explain what it is and where to find additional information.

3) The Boost C++ libraries have driven up to a point a lot of the C++11 features. It is a collection of high quality, experimental C++ libraries that is developed by an active community of C++ enthusiasts. Those same people participate in C++ standardization committees that defined the ISO C++11 standard and will produce the next standards. A simple reference, maybe in the same spot as template metaprogramming, would definitely make a useful addition.

Overall, I liked the book. Would I recommend it to a new programmer? No. But it is surely on the top of my list for programmers that want to succumb to the call of the C++ Programming Language.

Recommended reading...

If you have some programming background and are trying to learn C++, are an intermediate developer, or even if you're an advanced developer - this book is highly recommended reading.

In my opinion, this book teaches C++ properly, it teaches you the building blocks and facilities of the language from the ground up so you get accustomed to strings, vectors and other important features of the C++ standard library. This is exactly what Bjorne Stroustroup, the creator of the language, suggests and I find it so much more useful than starting off by learning the C programming language first.

This book covers C++11 features in an in depth fashion. Prior to having this book, I had a hard time finding enough information about all the aspects of the new standard. I especially like the explanation on rvalue references and the new move semantics.

Parts 3 and 4 of the book were particularly useful. Part 3 delves into copy semantics, the new move semantics, and includes a great chapter on object oriented programming.

Part 4 is also a treat as it's focused on regular expressions, random numbers, formatted IO, tools for large programs such as exception handling, namespaces and more.

This is my personal C++ book recommendation, along with "The C++ Standard Library" which is also updated to include C++11 and "API Design for C++" .

In his account of town and country life, of warriors, farmers, and entertainers, Bruce Mitchell shows the impact of Christianity on a heroic society, in which both men and women played important roles. This impact created a tension that is frequently apparent in a representative selection of fifty-one prose and verse texts provided in Part IV. Each of the texts is introduced and placed in context, and footnote annotations explain points of difficulty.

The book is illustrated with maps, line drawings, and photographs. It has a guide to further reading and full indexes, and concludes with a glossary tailored to meet the needs of those encountering Old English for the first time. The author's aim is to allow the reader both to understand Anglo-Saxon society and to experience the richness of its literature and culture. He will be found to have succeeded.

About the Author
Bruce Mitchell is Fellow Emeritus of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. His books include A Guide to Old English written with Fred C. Robinson (fifth edition, 1992), On Old English (1988), and the two volume Old English Syntax (1985). He is currently working with Fred C. Robinson on a new edition of Beowulf.

Who's Afraid of Beowulf?

If you're fascinated by English literature and language in general, as I was, but intimidated by the obscure vocabulary and inflections of "Old Anguish," this is your book. It's not a "for Dummies" manual, but it's more reader-friendly than a college text. It introduces all the fundamentals of the language, along with an overview of the culture that produced the tongue. It overlaps the more formal text, "Guide to Old English" (by Mitchell & Robinson) in some places word for word, but "Invitation" is much more chatty and fun. Mitchell's love for Old English is infectious, as is his conviction that it's not as hard to learn as it looks. By the time I was finished, I had a good beginner's command of Old English and a thirst to learn more.

An outstanding book.

As a student of various languages, but a newcomer to the study of Old English, I found this book an unintimidating but, nevertheless, comprehensive and in-depth introduction to the language. Mr. Mitchell begins by tracing the origins of our erstwhile obscure tongue, which has attained the status of a latter-day Latin in terms of its widespread use by native and non-native speakers alike in numerous environments. Unfortunately, many or most native speakers of English have little or no knowledge of the language in its earlier forms. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to enrich his own knowledge of the language through the study of its roots. It is a study not only of language, but history as well, a point which Mr. Mitchell highlights in such a way as to make this "dead" language come alive. The author grabs the attention of the reader from the first page, more than I thought possible in a didactic book which, of necessity, must teach the rudimentary elements of grammar, and manages to keep it even through the introduction of paradigms. This is in part due to his success in introducing these paradigms in the context of the language in use, as opposed to in uninterrupted pages of dry, grammatical tables which I have found in many other books. Already in the foreword, Mr. Mitchell has begun to give the reader a feel for the language by quoting simple passages and providing literal translations for them. An excellent introduction, and invitation, to a fascinating language, foreign and yet strangely familiar.

A really interesting book!

It's been hard work, but I've put in some elbow grease and made it.
A very readable introduction to Old English language, culture, art, and society. Nearly every aspect of Anglo-Saxon life is touched on, supported with carefully cited sources (usually primary), and a good selection of illustrations. The author's sincere passion for Old English always comes through, and he's very good about encouraging the student. When things are going to be a little hard, you're warned that you've got to just slog through it, and you are guided down the path.
Another nice thing about this book that should be pointed out is that it has a lot to offer people who aren't especially interested in learning Old English, but instead more engaged by the culture and life of the Anglo-Saxon people. Mitchell's expositions are fascinating and feature copious examples from both academic literature and primary sources. You don't need to know a lick of Old English to learn a lot from this book!
I would have appreciated a few touches, however. My primary complaint is that the translations often weren't literal enough. While this made them readable, I had to very frequently second-guess the translations while trying my hand at my own, and would have liked more chances to test my work directly to be sure I was on track. I'm not convinced that, especially in the discussions of language directly, I wouldn't have had an easier time with klutzier and more literal examples.
I'd also like to see all-color plates, in a future edition.
All said and done, this was an immensly satisfying process-- I'm not adept at Old English (one never learns a language all at once anyway, and let's face it: how on Earth do you get any practice if you're not in school? Nevermind what the Masters at Oxford do deciding just /how/ to inflect a long-dead tongue), but with every increase in comprehension I felt my understanding of both modern English and German considerably enhanced.
Above all, this was for me-- for now a hobbyist-- exactly the thing I wanted for some self-study. It might be that for you, too. I assure you that the first time you get a snip from Beowulf just right, it will put a big smile in your heart.

Although now defunct as a producer of motorcycles Laverda has acquired a following of almost fanatical proportion. The large capacity twins and triples are some of the most charismatic and exciting motorcycles produced in a golden era. With a successful endurance racing program publicizing them, Laverda’s twins soon earned a reputation for durability that wasn’t usually associated with Italian machinery. Originally built for the British market, the 1000cc Jota was the fastest Superbike available in its day. While the twins faded before the end of the 1970s, the triples continued for almost another decade before dying with a whimper. By this time the company was in serious difficulty and went into receivership. Despite a resurrection in the 1990s, it is the classic twins and triples of the late 1960s through until the mid-1980s that Laverda is now famous for.

If not they had to be up there in the top few with their fabulous Jotas. Ian Falloon's latest book, 'The Laverda Twins and Triples Bible', details just how the Jota came about. Of course it's not just about the iconic 1000cc triple as inside the 160 page, 9 7/8in x 8 1/8in hardbacked book the enthusiast will find the 650 and 750cc twins alongside the full range of 1000 and 1200 triples. There are chapters dealing with the technical development, racing history, modifications and even how the concept of the motorcycle evolved from Laverda's agricultural machinery background. Take, for example, the story of Laverda. Some of the sexiest Italian motorcycles on the planet are Laverdas – machines such as the competition-inspired twin-cylinder 750 SFC with its rear-set footrests, no-nonsense fairing and bright orange paintwork (the orange color is something that became a Laverda hallmark). Damn, the bike was built for speed! So it's interesting to learn that Laverda motorcycles arose from Laverda Macchine Agricole – an agricultural implement manufacturer that set up shop in Bregranze in 1873. Author Ian Falloon traces the origins of Laverda in a fact-packed new book, 'The Laverda Twins and Triples Bible'. Published in the UK by Veloce Publishing, the book includes information relevant to anyone restoring a Laverda, or anyone just plain interested in these Italian motorcycles. Falloon describes the history of Laverda – a company that started out producing small capacity single-cylinder machines for the Italian market in 1948. He discusses Laverda's intention to build large-capacity motorcycles, and even how the company's first production 650cc twin engine was patterned after that of Honda's legendary CB77 305cc Super Hawk. While the engine was inspired by the CB77, Falloon reports the rest of the machine was inspired by a Norton 650SS and a BMW R69S. Falloon writes: "Beyond the engine style of the Honda, the BMW influence could be seen in the mufflers, and the side profile was reminiscent of the Norton." Facts and details of all the Laverda twins and triples including the Jota and the rare RGS 1000 Executive are laid out in five chapters, with a separate entry for Racing History and an Appendix detailing Technical Specifications. The book truly is a bible for fans of the Laverda.

If you are an owner of a Laverda from this era, or planning to buy one to restore, then this book is absolutely essential. Why? Very simple really, Falloon documents the evolution of the Laverda twins and triples, logging almost every technical advance, each component change, new lick of paint, different decals for the US market etc. Even tiny details like the change in the way the battery tray is fitted to a particular bike, are recorded. There are hundreds of photos, covering many Laverda models, which will help any classic enthusiast identify exactly what they looking at on eBay, or in MCN, CBG etc before they make an offer on it. There's a general history of Laverda and some info on the racing success of the twins and triples as well. If you're a Laverda fan, then this book is fascinating reading, packed with a wealth of detailed information regarding model updates, technical changes etc. If that detailed info isn't your thing then this book is a bit dull, as Falloon fails to capture the lasting appeal, the emotional attraction of the big Laverda triples, the bikes known as the Beasts of Breganze. You wouldn't feel any fire in your belly reading this plodding prose. There's also nothing on the Laverda Monjuic 500 – arguably one of the most evocative twin cylinder Laverdas ever built – which is a bizarre oversight. The best feature in this book is the 'Distinguishing Features' box out panels, which act as a spotter's guide for anyone interested in acquiring a particular Laverda twin or triple. At $59.95 the book is expensive, but if you are a true Laverda motorcycle collector, you'll find it is worth every penny.

La Vera Vista, Issue 201, November 2007 Review by James White-Cooper for the Magazine for International Laverda Owners Club, UK Ian is an author and journalist, renowned worldwide for his 20+ books on motorcycles, in particular Italian ones. Born in New Zealand, Ian now lives in Australia and rides a '74 750SFC. As the title of the book suggests Ian concentrates on the road going 650/750 twins and the triples from the Breganze era. He does however include a chapter giving a brief history of the marque and there is also a chapter on the racing exploits. Ian devotes a chapter to each group, 650/750 twins, 750SFC, 1000 1800 triples, 1200s and the 1200 triples. The developments and technical specifications of each model are included along with some production details. The information given greatly expands on that published in other already existing Laverda books, yet does not repeat the same old anecdotes and images. A worthwhile addition to every Laverdisti's bookshelf, and especially to those also owning an anorak and bobble-hat! The book is hardback, 160 pages and contains over 150 photographs.

About the Author

One of the world's foremost motorcycle historians, Ian Falloon is the author of more than twenty books on motorcycles including the The Ducati 750 Bible, Ducati 900 Bible, Ducati Story, Moto Guzzi Story, Honda Story, Kawasaki Story, BMW Story, Moto Guzzi Sport Bible and Laverda Twin and Triple Bible. He has a small collection of classic sporting motorcycles, including a 1974 Ducati 750 Super Sport that he has owned since 1976. A freelance contributor to a number of motorcycle magazines around the world, Ian Falloon was born in New Zealand but currently lives in Australia with his wife Miriam, and sons Ben and Tim.

Solid Laverda history and loaded with information

Falloon does a very nice job of introducing the marque, then walking us thru the history of Laverda twin and triple development from the inception in the late 60's to the final machines of the late 80's. It's an outstanding resource for anyone involved in a purchase or restoration, as he does a meticulous job documenting model changes from not only one year to the next, but inter-model year changes too. Photos are high quality.

If I had one criticism about the book it's that Falloon tends to focus almost completely on technical specs, and doesn't provide a lot of context on how the bikes performed, reaction from the public and motorcycle press, and some of the more subjective aspects of the bikes that would bring the machines to life more. I recognize that this probably wasn't the main goal of the book, but it would have added greatly to the readability of the book.

Must-have for Laverda enthusiasts

I bought "The Laverda Twins and Triples Bible" because I am extremely enthusiastic about Laverdas. I already have Ian Falloon's excellent book "The Ducati Story", so I knew the author does good work. Ian did a great job with the Laverda Bible, giving lots of detail and excellent photographs that I haven't seen published elsewhere. Highly recommended for enthusiasts of Laverdas, especially those interested in the period from the 650 twin in the late 1960s through to the end of the Breganze era in the mid 1980s.

Impractical, Confusing for Students

As a theorist, composer, and educator of advanced theoretical subjects, I found the book impractical for teaching purposes. The presentation and sequence of the theoretical materials could be better organized. Some concepts such as circle progressions and stylistic practice are impractical and does not teach proper techniques in harmonization and voice leading. Circle progressions can be easily explained as harmonic sequences. The book does not cover enough on rhythm and rests. There are errors in the 16th c counterpoint with a couple of examples containing major 6th intervals, which is not permitted in the style. No mention about 18th c. counterpoint. There are several other theoretical concepts I do not agree with that conflict with other well-known theory texts. Non-harmonic tones are not clearly defined and several are missing. I could understand why students are coming to me for help considering how difficult it is for them to interpret the ideas presented in this book. Not all the information is bad, but much can be presented in a much clearer and understandable way.

Excellent music theory text

I have used this text successfully for several years with first-year college theory students, both in the classroom and in directed study. It offers many clear examples and a variety of exercises for students to complete. I intend to continue using it and would recommend it not only as a classroom text but as a vehicle for independent study for practicing musicians without an extensive knowledge of music theory.

About the Author
James Turk and John Rubino are the co-authors of The Coming Collapse of the Dollar and How To Profit From It: Make a Fortune by Investing in Gold and Other Hard Assets (Doubleday, 2004). James Turk is the founder and a director of GoldMoney, a Jersey, Channel Islands company and a leader in online gold trading. He is also a director of the GoldMoney Foundation, a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to providing information on sound money. After beginning his business career with The Chase Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase), he went onto manage the Commodity Department of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, that country’s sovereign wealth fund. He is the author of several monographs and numerous articles on money and banking. He and his wife live in London, England. John Rubino runs DollarCollapse.com, a popular financial website, and contributes regularly to CFA Magazine. Conversational tone, but packed with information

A very readable book, especially considering how much material it covers.

The book is divided into four parts. Part I explains what a precarious situation the Western financial world is really in, due to “papering over” crisis after crisis with increasing amounts of debt and fiat currency, yet without actually fixing anything. If you’re fairly new to this, Part I will alert you to some major risks (but in plain, rather than alarmist, language). If you’re already somewhat worried, you’ll wish you could make your friends and relatives sit down and read this section, because it lays out the dangers nicely.

Part II explains some of the consequences of all this unfettered debt and currency creation, which go beyond what’s traditionally thought of as economics. There’s the burden of inflation (largely hidden and denied), and the perils of rising interest rates, both of which are well described. But it also discusses increased corruption, an ever-expanding (because easily funded) military-surveillance state, manipulated markets and a resultant loss of trust, and a level of societal complexity which is not sustainable and will end unpredictably (but badly). That’s just a partial list. People who think they’re not interested in economics might be a lot more interested if they understood how “easy money” plays into many of the issues they care about.

Part III highlights some of the features of our slightly bizarre financial system, necessary knowledge for understanding how to protect oneself. It covers open secrets which are easily understood but which much of the public is woefully unaware of: the way fractional reserve banking actually works, the amount of power unelected central bankers wield, and why inflation is a hidden tax that people don’t realize they’re paying. Understanding the unfairness of the financial system makes you want to distance yourself from it, which leads to Part IV, the “what you can do to prepare” section.

Part IV involves, in part, bullish arguments for gold and silver, and there might be some skeptics who’ve grown impatient with precious metals. If you’re in that crowd, this part of the book is an excellent reminder of what the fundamentals really are, which it might be helpful to revisit. The impatient would also benefit from reading the introduction to the book, which gives a good explanation for why the financial breakdown that history dictates has not happened yet.

It should be a useful book for people at different levels of knowledge, from someone just learning about money & economics to someone who knows a lot, but might love to have some clearly outlined talking points to bring to friends and relatives.

A good book, unusually well written, but little new helpful advice

I'm contributing this because I have benefitted a great deal from other people's book reviews. This is an extremely well written discussion concerning the historical and well as current events in the financial and monetary world. Most of this was in the last book, and also available on the internet. However, it all becomes a very academic exercise if there is no good solution. The disappointing part is that there is precious little usable new information concerning what a person can do to protect themselves. I would have hoped at this late date we would have more concrete guidance on how to mitigate the possible damage. There are too many authors that consider the solution to a risky situation to be doing something that is even more risky to counter it. Great, if your timing is perfect. But if you are that good at timing markets, you are probably going to do OK anyway. The other thing is while I think that you can have somewhat of a handle on the economic situation the political / legal situation is the wild card and we need to know more about this factor. Finally, there is the time factor. Yes, the sun will eventually go supernova, but it may not do that for quite a while, if you get my drift. Meanwhile, life happens. In particular a more balanced view to the investing approaches might be useful, including more of a discussion concerning possible disadvantages.

I would recommend the book to anyone who is not yet familiar with this subject, or who hasn't read the previous book. It might make a good gift.

Enlightening with a leap to the fanciful

I greatly enjoyed the book. It was well written, entertaining, informative and thought provoking...but I have a hard time believing the authors' vision of the next ten years.

Yes we are in debt up to our eyeballs, yes we are printing money like mad, yes governments lie about statistics and other things...but I'm not sure it is going to lead to the crack-up boom as described and I'm not sure catastrophic collapse is a possibility within the next few years or so.

The chapter on how the most basic US government statistics of unemployment and inflation were understated was fascinating. I knew about them, but the implications were not clear until this book.

The segment on how the gold market was manipulated was well written and I had never heard of it until this book, frankly. That was eye opening.

Fractional reserved banking was a mortal sin in this book as was central banking in general. Von Mises, Rothbard, Ron Paul et al were weaved throughout the pages. I don't quite buy into their black and white view of the world. Yes I want smaller and more efficient government and yes I want the Constitution to drive many decisions politically. But the Constitution was made by men and wasn't perfect (remember 3/5ths).

That said, when you predict the end of an era---in this case a dollar denominated one---there are times when I thought the authors went overboard. The Epilogue reads like an Ayn Rand novel to me. No, I don't think precious metals will lead us to smaller banks and the end of our military empire.

Interestingly, the main purpose of the book was to provide investment advice. All the material discussed above was primer for understanding how to get wealthy during the coming collapse of the dollar. Unload your bonds, sell volatility, selectively short the market and of course buy gold and silver. Maybe, but I remain unconvinced.

I recommend the book, but you determine for yourself whether you want to go their route or not.

Respirava com dificuldade e a olhava com desejo. Suas mãos se detiveram em seus seios e tirou a camisa que os cobriam e o espartilho para beijá-los faminto. Era inútil resistir e sabia, fechou os olhos e o suportou tudo, estava exausta de lutar e lhe doíam os braços.
