About the Author
Yves Sente began writing scripts in 1999 and has already acquired considerable clout, being chosen as successor to Van Hamme for the series "Thorgal" and the sequel to "XIII" and working with Van Hamme on "Blake & Mortimer."

André Juillard is a celebrated artist with a career spanning more than 35 years. He has worked on famous series such as "Les Sept Vies de L’Epervier" and "Masquerouge" and obtained the Grand Prix at the Angoulême festival in 1996.

The latest new album is actually set before the first one!

This is the latest Blake and Mortimer story. While Cinebooks has it marked as #21, its properly #23 and was released in 2014 in French. This is the first English translation. This is by the new team of Yves Sente and Andre Juillard.

And while its the latest B&M album, the story is set entirely BEFORE the first EP Jacobs Black & Mortimer story, "The Secret of the Swordfish", and actually shows a lot of the setup for that story.

Set in 1944, we find Blake as an RAF Squadron Leader (rank equivalent to that of Major), overseeing a flying squadron on the aircraft carrier Intrepid. When German launches an experimental jet flying wing to attack London, and his squadron isn't fast enough, Blake takes the experimental Golden Rocket jet to attack. This Golden Rocket is a smaller prototype of the Golden Rocket seen in "Secret of the Swordfish".

Stopping the attack, but at the cost of the GR, Blake is soon brought into matters going on in the capital that involve Mortimer. Blake is slowly pulled back into the intelligence service as he is taken to the secret base in England that is working on the new Golden Rocket and Swordfish, which is overseen by Mortimer. They visit Bletchley Park, where they meet 2 people: Colonel Olrik and a Tibetan scientist. But there also seems to be a spy operating in the days leading up to D-Day that Blake must ferret out.

While this is going on, we see the preparation that the British Military is putting in place to deal with the NEXT world threat: Basam Dandu and his Yellow Empire in Tibet. They are already setting up the secret bases and Mortimer is designing the new superweapons that will be used.

The title comes from an interesting ancient cryptographic method used by the spies.

Overall, a very enjoyable album in the style of EP Jacobs.

We are next getting the final EP Jacob's albums, the 2 part "Professor Sato's 3 Formula". I have no idea what will come next as I'm not aware of any new albums being worked on.

More theory than practice!

As a commercial GPS user, I was looking for a book that would offer a fairly basic overview of GPS, but that would still go into significant detail. This book does exactly that, but it also covers a lot of the mathematical theory behind GPS. This book certainly isn't introductory and I think would be more suited to a surveyor with a good knowledge of surveying techniques who was interested in GPS. The mathematics gets a bit heavy for a non-mathematician but Chapter 7 (Surveying with GPS) is an excellent introduction/review of the practical uses of GPS in the field. A good intermediate-advanced level book, probably very suited to students.

A resource for more than just GPS

This is an excellent book for anyone that works with spacecraft geometry and/or timekeeping. It contains concise descriptions of coordinate systems, orbital elements and timekeeping. I've been using it as an algorithm 'cookbook'. This is not a book for a casual GPS user, or someone who is sqeamish about math. It's much easier to use than the Astronomical Almanac for basic algorithms. Like a fool, I lent it out. Now I need to buy another one.

Examining eight conflicts, including Winston Churchill's decision to reject negotiations with Adolf Hitler, Nelson Mandela's decision to initiate discussions with South Africa's apartheid government, IBM's discovery that its largest competitor copied its software, poisoned labor-management issues in the San Francisco Symphony, and examples from his professional experience, Mnookin (Beyond Winning) provides a straightforward account of the deliberative options when facing a "Faustian tension between pragmatism and principle." About the Author
Robert H. Mnookin is the Samuel Williston Professor of Law at Harvard Law, the Chair of the Steering Committee of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, and the Director of the Harvard Negotiation Research Project. A renowned teacher and lecturer, Professor Mnookin has taught numerous workshops for corporations, governmental agencies and law firms throughout the world and trained many executives and professions in negotiation and mediation skills. Professor Mnookin has written or edited nine books and numerous scholarly articles. His books include Beyond Winning: Negotiating to Create Value in Deals and Disputes (with Scott Peppet and Andrew Tulumello) and Negotiating on Behalf of Others.

Good facts, few negotiation principles

Mnookin begins Bargaining with the Devil with the important and timely question of whether you should negotiate with parties you view as evil and uncompromising, and ends with the simple and commonsensical answer: "Not always, but more often than you feel like it."

For examples of negotiating with "evil," Mnookin divides the book into "global devils," "business devils," and "family devils." In the section on global devils, Mnookin explains why he thinks Rudolf Kasztner was right to negotiate with Adolf Eichmann, why Winston Churchill was right not to negotiate with Hitler, and why Nelson Mandela was right to negotiate with the apartheid regime in South Africa. In the other two sections, Mnookin draws on his experience as a mediator and relates more difficult but successful mediations involving IBM v. Fujitsu, the San Francisco symphony, and family law disputes.

While Mnookin's political examples are well-researched and interesting in revealing the details of the decision-making process of the various actors, and while his examples of difficult business and domestic mediations exhibit him as an adept and successful mediator, conspicuously lacking from the book are developed or detailed theories or principles of negotiation that weave the examples together. As a result, the book seems forced and fails to come together as a whole.

Praiseworthy for its ambitious topic and call for conflict resolution, Bargaining with the Devil remains worth reading. But the book's lesson also remains simple: Don't demonize your opponent or overly-moralize your own position or you may end up worse off.

If you're looking for a detailed book on theories and strategies of negotiation, you should look elsewhere, like to Mnookin's own Beyond Winning or Fisher's Getting to Yes.

WWSD: What would Spock do?

Have you ever fought with someone you thought was evil? Ever felt betrayed by a friend, a family member, a business partner? In these situations, emotions are fundamentally intertwined with any decision to negotiate; in fact, the very act of negotiation may attack one's identity. Moral righteousness is a powerful thing, and notions of right and wrong/good and evil can drive people to forgo negotiation even when it would be in their best interests. This is the struggle that is explored through the seven real-world scenarios in the book. Mnookin analyzes the difficult decisions in each chapter, delving into the possible alternatives to negotiation, providing creative solutions, and assessing the decisions made by the parties. The scenarios range from the harrowing ordeal of negotiating with Nazis to save Jewish lives, to the bitterness of a divorce settlement - all with the common thread of scrutinizing the seemingly impossible task of knowing when to engage and when to refuse (my favorite chapter in particular is the one that focuses on Nelson Mandela's decision to negotiate with the National Party). The book reads like a novel - each story is unique, gripping, and monumental in its own way, yet Mnookin's writing makes them easily accessible to the reader. I found myself completely immersed into each situation (for example, I still cannot decide whether I would have ever negotiated with the KGB). It also provides a critical lens to analyze how to deal with other "evil" actors, such as terrorist regimes, etc.

Decisions to negotiate are everywhere. The book does more than just describe other people's negotiation decisions - Mnookin provides a great framework to approach negotiation in general, taking you through each step and cautioning the reader against falling into common traps such as demonization and moralism. He introduces the fantastic "Spock" character to help conceptualize the "rational" decisionmaker, and yet he does not advocate that this type of analysis is always best; Mnookin fully understands the nuances of human emotion and identity, as is evident in his storytelling and perceptive analysis. He never pretends that any negotiation is ever easy. In sum, the book is a fantastic read. I would recommend it to anyone.

great read for a flight

This book is a lot of fun! It's quite ambitious, trying to be a number of things at the same time, and I think it largely succeeded.
I expected a combination of philosophical treatise, a la Book of Job or Faustus, and negotiation handbook. Mnookin didn't disappoint on either front, although that's not ultimately what the book's about. It does raise, and sometimes answer, fascinating questions of moral and political philosophy, exploring whether negotiation ever degenerates into "pandering to evil" and the conflicting obligations of a leader to his constituents and his conscience (think Profiles in Courage). And while not a how-to negotiation guide, it provides a fascinating window into the work of a master negotiator, chronicling some of the author's most impressive interventions.
Bargaining with the Devil also has a bit of a self-help flavor to it, laying out the many intellectual and psychological traps that thwart many of our efforts to negotiate thorny situations at work and in our private lives.
Above all though, its a book of stories, some historical and some intensely private. Because most of the chapters are self-contained tales of individuals who faced agonizing decisions of whether or not to negotiate with perceived devils, it's easy to pick this book up for an hour or so on a flight, by the pool or before bed -- and very hard to put it down!

Sampling (the removal of a small amount of material from a larger volume to test it for a desired characteristic) is important to industry in order to monitor the progress of a reaction or the quality (purity) of a product. To ensure that the sample is representative of the larger volume, certain procedures need to be followed in removing the sample and statistical interpretation of the data. An example of sampling would be determining the purity of a train boxcar load of fine clay by several small samples representative of the bulk. Both of his books are usually purchased together. I have used this industrially, great for analytical and quality control. At times, depending on the amount of bulk product, it becomes necessary to make a series of measurements on a batch to truly arrive at a value that can be trusted. Eighty percent or more of all corn, cotton and soybeans grown in the United States consists of genetically modified (GM) varieties, according to Weasel. But she only gives these statistics at the end of her account of the battle over GM organisms, leaving readers till then with the impression that an equal tug-of-war is in progress. The author, a biologist at Portland State University in Oregon, also skimps on the science in the battle over whether genetically modified organisms and foods are safe for both the environment and people, focusing instead on the legal, political and emotional aspects of the tussle between big business, which claims that GM products can solve world hunger and reduce disease, and environmentalists asserting that bad science is being driven by corporate greed. She summarizes a number of the most important skirmishes, such as over golden rice (manipulated to have high levels of vitamin A) and the injection of artificial bovine growth hormone into cattle to boost milk production. But her account is relatively flat and superficial, doing a workmanlike job of covering political issues but leaving readers short of what they need to evaluate GM. (Dec.)

A little dry...but an important read

This book deals with a very important topic and has very catchy chapter headings, but most of the text is rather dry. I am going to test it out with my students this semester and will provide additional feedback after testing. It does cover the subject very well.

Well researched, solid guide into GM foods.

I purchased this book knowing very little about genetically modified foods, hoping to get some insight into the controversy. However, having read Michael Pollan and Marion Nestle, I figured that I had a good grip on the topic of sustainable food. This book introduced me to an entirely other side that I didn't know at all. Not always easy to read, I found myself absorbed nonetheless in the thick stock of information packed into relatively few pages. What I expected was a book detailing the health aspects of eating GM foods (there was very little) and a biased account of the evil that is GM. The author was very good at maintaining a middle ground, instead letting the research and facts speak for themselves. I left this book feeling much better informed and having a better understanding about what I am eating and why everyone thinks it is so bad.

Heavily steeped in science, with ample evidence, this book is essential for anyone wanting to have a real understanding of a very misunderstood subject.
