As good as anything by Ludlum, Harris or Forsythe
By Rokurota
There are so many disappointing "thrillers" out there it's refreshing to pick up a novel that actually works. The Berlin Deception has intrigue, espionage, a crafty, persistent antagonist, double crosses and for WW2 geeks, lots of references to actual locales and events. This is essentially a "what if?" thriller that sets the action underneath actual historical events. The writing is clean but not facile, so the prose is far more satisfying than most of the popular authors out there (Grisham, Baldacci, Patterson). I compare this book to Ludlum's opus for that reason -- deep layers of fiction wrapped up in complex sentences. I mention Robert Harris for the obvious connection to Fatherland and his other books set during historic events.
I have only one complaint -- the extreme duress our poor hero goes through made me somewhat exhausted, especially near the end. But this is more than balanced by the wordcraft and fun of the book and the complexity of the characters, especially the female lead. For these reasons, and because it's a first novel by a fresh new voice, I'm rating this book five stars. It's worth a read!

This was the first ebook that I have ever owned and downloaded to my kindle.
I found it was a book that you couldn't put down once you started reading, it took you from one danger point to another with ease.
I am now going to find another book written by the same author, as he has me hooked.

compelling
By Nancy Helen
Berlin Deception is well written and compelling. Spy thrillers are not my favorite type of book; however, I was curious about this author's first novel. Once I started Berlin Deception I did not want to put it down. The historical setting description and character development are excellent. I look forward to reading Jeff Vanke's next novel.
