When people go to hell this must be what they are forced to read.

First off I'm not trying to badmouth this book because I didn't put in the effort and got a poor grade. I hold an A in this course. That said, if it's assigned by one of your profs there isn't much you can do to avoid reading it. Good luck.

Every sentence in this book uses 25 words when 3 will do. Every chapter covers enough material to merit 4 or 5 chapters in any other textbook. The writing is convoluted, verbose, and seems to intentionally describe topics and concepts in the most roundabout manner possible. I might understand if this book were assigned to medical students or maybe even law school (there are entire chapters that just list out laws and regulations - makes for some riveting reading material) but I'm just trying to get through a coding certificate.

This is a required textbook for several of my classes for a medical degree. Huge book with a font that should be larger. Very informative but a bit hard to comprehend in some places.

About the Author
N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. Dr. Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics, and in more widely accessible forums, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Fortune. Dr. Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005, he served as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.

Good economics textbook

Decent start of an economics textbook. Nothing to particularly distinguish it from any other but it wasn't a bad book.
Like some of the better books, most of the best information wasn't in the actual chapter but was in the side bars and pieces. Those examples and ideas tended to add significant value to the conversation.

A must-have for the medieval arms enthusiast

The late Ewart Oakeshott was without doubt the world's foremost expert on medieval swords. In "Records of the Medieval Sword" Oakeshott expounds on his earlier works which span some fifty years of study. His method of classification of medieval swords from the Viking era up to the sixteenth century is the world norm today, and the many fascinating pictures, descriptions, and drawings of the most rare and precious specimens from collections all over the world are a must-have for the student of medieval arms. Whether collector, blade smith, European martial artist or historian, Oakeshott's work is an indispensable reference in the study of medieval arms history. His descriptions of the individual known specimens are detailed and thorough, and make for a good source of reference, while his last entry, an article on the disputed authenticity of a sword of Edward III reads like a detective story. The detailed x-ray pictures, close-up photographs, and lab reports in respect of the sword's examination make you not want to put the book down, but read on to find out if this controversial sword is a fake, or indeed the real thing.

An excellent book by Ewart Oakshott, I purchased this book as an adjunct to the medieval swords by Oakshott. It is highly recommended with others making a set that covers the end of the Roman Empire in the west through to the beginnings of the rennaisance. This volume covers the classic medieval sword recommended reading if your interested in swords and the history of their evolution and design

Many interesting and useful illustrations, especially of hilts and guards. There are other books which cover some of the same material, but the author is well known for his work in this area and so the quality as a reference source is excellent.

How to pack a city into a book - Lesson 1

This is a dense manifesto of ideas. It might be termed a printed hypertext, with a continuous glossary of terms being defined by Koolhaas this could serve as an alternative dictionary. The book is too broad for simply architecture, urban planning theory &c. which it professes to having as its infrastructure. It deals with all design issues, from the content of OMAs projects, to the beautifully printed and assembled object that is the book itself. Attempt to read as a linear narrative at your own risk.

A Great Big Mega-Mega

S, M, L, XL, love it or hate it, is seminal; Rem Koolhaas is one of the most important cultural figures on the planet at this time. S, M, L, XL serves as memoir, manifesto, documentation, diagnosis, prognosis, prophecy, plan, agenda, & propoganda -- local and/or global historicocriticophilosophical montage, collage, and barrage. The book is beautiful. Bruce Mau has indeed "given form" to the silver juggernaut. The cover, the illustrations, typographies, photos, and text come together in the manner of a Tristam Shandy or Finnegan's Wake. S, M, L, XL as literature is a commentary on the condition we call "modernity". Koolhaas seeks an understanding of both his profession and the chaotic dynamics of the world his profession leaves structures in. Koolhaas is at home in the chaos, and like Pynchon in fiction, or Antonioni in film, is remarkably detached and involved in the process at the same time(maybe this is false, but Koolhaas as a writer and architect is an auteur possessed by genius, and S, M, L, XL is both comforting and uncanny at the same time). S,M,L,XL is proof that Koolhaas is aware of the increasingly global nature of the architect's profession. I am fascinated by the concept and practice of traveling, and activity Koolhaas knows all too well as a traveler in the discourse and practice of "modernity". Essays within S,M,L,XL such as "Islam After Einstein" and "Singapore Songlines:Thirty Years of Tabula Rasa" show his knowledge of the increasingly important relation between the East and West, and the implications involved. Perhaps the most brilliant essay/manifesto in the book is one of the most recently written, "The Generic City" which questions notions of progress in history and the archeology(ies) of modernism. One photo in the back of S,M,L, XL is particularly haunting in its image and message. It shows a larger-than-life and late Deng Xiaoping in the foreground of a painting of a coastal city, rais! ing his right hand gently to his people looking at the mural. The insert reads, "Two billion people won't be wrong." We'll find out. This is where much of Koolhaas' importance lies, his insight into what the great comparative historian and Sinophile Joseph Needham called the "Grand Titration". S,M,L, XL must endure, though it will not be read by the masses. It transcends (a dangerous word to use) architectural writing. Anyone concerned about the future of both the arts and sciences and those who wish to gain a greater understanding of our relation to our environment(s) must read this book.

Extra Medium...

There's a terrific line in Breakfast at Tiffany's. George Peppard proudly hands neighbor Audrey Hepburn a copy of his just-published book. She has no idea what to do with it, so she puts it on a shelf next to a vase, backs away and says "Doesn't that look nice?"
This book is a lot like that. A self-conciously designed object for the homes of style consumers who already have the right clothes and the B&B Italia furniture. A prop for the still-life they want to inhabit. If they ever got around to "reading" it, they'd discover to their great relief... it's NOT a book to be read in any strict classical sense.

It also reminds me of a New Yorker cartoon where one associate asks another, "Read the first few pages of any good books lately?" The age of the short attention span is not going away any time soon. This hefty grey slab is easily recast as the shiny new headstone for verbalized intelligence.

As Kracauer holds it, there's nothing wrong with framing a culture via fragments, but I have plenty of qualms about advancing one's own ideas that way. And I'm suspect of ideas that trowel on style in the abundance seen here. If I could believe Bruce Mau's intentions were more than just trying to look new, (This 'look' now permeates architecture publications) I'd have more respect for this, but it was obviously calculated as a totem of style and style-suffusion.

For better or for worse, the book got noticed, the industry was distracted by the pretty surfaces and the ascent of Koolhaas is a done deal.

If you liked the Daly series, you will love this book. Yes the lovin was hot, very hot, and you are left wanting more. I can not wait until the next book in the series comes out. You want to findout how the wedding goes, and what happens with Cord and Sully. I loved this book.

Brynn Paulin, great story telling...! Moon finds herself back home and her men still want her ! Good story with plenty of suspense. Hot romance and sexy lovin' amidst the arson fires on the huge ranch. The vilian is found out and dealt with. I don't mind the M/M action, because it's well done and is at a minimum. Moon finds her happy ending. Good series, and the Daly way is the only way. ENJOY !

Well Brynn you did it again. Very hot menage read. Waited a long time for book 6 in this series but, glad that you finally continued it! You can read this book alone but, why go back and read the whole series! My standard warning.... this has m/m/f sex in it....so if you don't like don't read.

American Poetry in Performance: From Walt Whitman to Hip Hop is the first book to trace a comprehensive history of performance poetry in America, covering 150 years of literary history from Walt Whitman through the rap-meets-poetry scene. It reveals how the performance of poetry is bound up with the performance of identity and nationality in the modern period and carries its own shifting cultural politics. This book stands at the crossroads of the humanities and the social sciences; it is a book of literary and cultural criticism that deals squarely with issues of "performance," a concept that has attained great importance in the disciplines of anthropology and sociology and has generated its own distinct field of performance studies. American Poetry in Performance will be a meaningful contribution both to the field of American poetry studies and to the fields of cultural and performance studies, as it focuses on poetry that refuses the status of fixed aesthetic object and, in its variability, performs versions of race, class, gender, and sexuality both on and off the page.

Relating the performance of poetry to shifting political and cultural ideologies in the United States, Hoffman argues that the vocal aspect of public poetry possesses (or has been imagined to possess) the ability to help construct both national and subaltern communities.  American Poetry in Performance explores public poets' confrontations with emergent sound recording and communications technologies as those confrontations shape their mythologies of the spoken word and their corresponding notions about America and Americanness.

much is missing

There are a few foundational books I want to recommend first regarding the history of performance/literary theater: Towards a Poor Theatre (Theatre Arts (Routledge Paperback))primarily Grotowski, linked here. In an age of excess and spectacle Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle as described by Hedges in the book I linked, we have lost all sense of humanity along with common sense. Look at the extreme greed of global capitalists and the debates from "conservative" Republicans in the U.S. running for president where Christian values take a backseat to politicized religious ideology. "Humanity suffers when The Many suffer for the wealth of a elite few." I'm quoting poet Hedwig Gorski whose book linked here documents Intoxication: Heathcliff on Powell Street how they put Grotowski's Poor Theater into practice in the 1970s in a skewed way, maybe a sloppy American way compared to the long traditions of Polish theatre. The results were fascinating, to say the least. It is fitting that this book is still available and in print. For those less interested in theory, you might be interested in knowing what the actors in the film My Dinner with Andre linked here My Dinner with Andre were discussing: Grotowski theatre exercises, theory, and practice. Years ago, I had the privilege of seeing a Grotowski trained actor from South America do a solo performance, and my life was changed forever. I highly recommend Grotowski essential book as a foundation for all the individual theater movements, including slam/hip hop of today, and the two books and DVD I linked here as essential for anyone interested in the real history of American poetry in performance and the spoken word movement including slam.

About the Author
Nivaldo Tro is currently chair of the department of chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990.   He received his B.A degree in chemistry from Westmont College and earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution.  Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.  Honored as Westmont’s outstanding teacher of the year in 1994, 2001, and 2008, he was also named the college’s outstanding researcher of the year in 1996. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Alicia, Kyle, and Kaden. For leisure, he enjoys reading, writing, snowboarding, biking, and other outdoor activities with his family.

Perfect book for beginners in chem

Perfect book for beginners in chem. special features of the book eg skill builder boxes pose questions relating to the material in the chapter. These help in acquiring the necessary knowledge and helps understand the topic better. At the end of each chapter there is a summary of the concepts learnt, and many question types that ensure the necessary knowledge has been acquired. The language of the book is Easy to understand. Many illustrations are in picture form to help with visualization of what happens. The book also has a website where online one on one tutorials can be used to ask any doubts. This books is perfect because every other book will just introduce to the main topics but this book has every topic in chemistry introduced. This way the student gets to know which area of chemistry he/she is most likely interested in.

Definitely worth buying if you are looking for a book which covers everything you want in a clear understandable way.

PS I never took a chem course in high school. Right now I'm in uni and i'm majoring in mechanical engineering. I have chem course which is general chem. But because I had no prior knowledge of chem I bought this book to help me out get introed to all areas of chem and especially those I will need. So in the summer i went through the whole book solving every exercise that is in it. Now i find chem interesting (ty Nivaldo) !!

Sorry for such a long review but when it is about a perfect book, length shouldn't matter ;)

Ripped off again, do not buy Kindle versions.

*sigh* Bought the rental version of this book on Amazon, because it was the same as the hardcover and thus not as heavy. Of course it does not include the all important access code which you need to pass any college class these days. So as a result I have just tossed another $80 down the proverbial drain.

Michael: But since you bought the kindle edition I do believe that it only comes with the book version for the kindle

As always, buyer beware, DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK. YOU WILL BE SCREWED.

An overlooked masterpiece

This book looks at American cultural history since the Civil War through the prism of historical changes in the field of psychotherapy--and at the same time puts psychotherapy in a historical context. It's simply the best cultural history of the US I've ever read. It traces the threads--primarily unbridled capitalism, rugged individualism, and the decline of the family and community--that have left us with the "empty self" which so many suffer from today. That is, a self that is depressed, anxious, psychosomatic, addicted--desperate to be filled up, by consumer goods, by peak experiences, by celebrity, by psychotherapy--without recognizing how much of our suffering comes from social change.

The thread of self is woven into psychology and history

This is a fun and informative description of how history and psychology have influenced each other, resulting in a sense of self that shapes and is shaped by our culture. Many psychological approaches end up in navel gazing introversion. Cushman dispenses with these and paints a clear picture of history and psychology dancing together in an embrace that allows the self to be both a cultural artifact and a culture shaper. Ideas can change the world and Cushman's book is full of ideas that have changed history, for better or for worse. The combination of academic rigor, interesting anecdotal evidence and plain funny material are rare in a single volume. If you are tired of the standard psychological introspection, try this one for a refreshing perspective on the dynamics of history, culture and the self.

Why is this not manditory reading for psychology?

A fascinating, entertaining book. I cannot recommend Cushman highly enough! It is truly disappointing that book has been overlooked by the discipline of psychology. However, the reasons it has been are obvious once you read it. Cushman details how psychology ignores its basic assumptions (e.g., about the self, the nature of understanding) and consequently perpetuates the problems it seeks to allieviate. This is a central point -- psychology is elevating a notion of self (i.e., the empty self) that is only filled by psychotherapy, not "cured". For those who are willing to reflect on how the profession is influenced by moral presuppositions, and political and economic factors - this is a must read. Moreover - Cushman offers solutions. For those who know of this book -- it is a hidden classic.

Nice Sketch for a Good Study on Diebenkorn

Poor reproductions, most in black and white, and often several on a small size page. Short but good introduction to Diebenkorn and his art, but it is, or seems to be, a mid-career publication. I would go for the larger, more full career books with large full page reproductions.

How is the GMAT SC Grail 3rd edition different from the 2nd edition ?Even if you already have the SC Grail 2nd edition, it still makes sense to buy the 3rd edition of the book. Here are some reasons why:

The 3rd edition covers advanced concepts such as Parallelism of Gerund Phrases and Action nouns, Conjunctive Adverbs and Run-on sentences, etc. 

The Usage section of the 3rd edition includes new concepts such as the use of only, the confusion between twice and double, greater and more, etc.

The Best Sentence Correction Book Ever

Being a GMAT Aspirant, I have gone through most of the popular books available in the market. The list includes books from Manhattan, Kaplan and Official Guides etc. And for Sentence Correction, I had always believed "Manhattan Sentence Correction" as the best book, until recently when i ordered "The Sentence Correction Grail", which i must say lives up to the claim it makes, it is indeed the only book one is going to need to ace the Sentence Correction on GMAT. I can't say enough how pleased i am to have this book, It targets the basics, strengthens them and practice drills at the end of each chapter contains some really smart tricky questions, which test the concepts on various scales. I will say the questions belong to 650-750 types questions. On the top of it the book contains a 125 smart questions practice set, unlike any other book in the market that makes this book a perfect weapon in my arsenal. This is a great book for both native and non-native English speakers. I will strongly recommend buying this book who strives to improve his/her score. It's worth more than its price.

I bought this book after reading its excellent reviews over the internet and must say I wasn’t disappointed. There is no other book in the market that explains the grammar tested on the GMAT in such a non-technical manner. I have also referred to other books for GMAT SC, including Manhattan SC, but at least for me the content in those books was far too complicated, especially for non-native speakers. The USP of the SC Grail 3rd edition is that everything in it is very easy to understand. The idiom list in the book is also very smartly put together as it does not go overboard by including a very large number of idioms. The question bank also has an excellent mix of questions, especially on Parallelism. All in all this book truly deserves all the accolades that come its way and I strongly recommend it to all GMAT aspirants.
