It's great that she can enjoy something that I also did ...

Goosebumps book were a big part of my childhood. I'd come home from school with a new book from the library, read the whole thing and would wait impatiently to get a different one the next day. Now my 7 year old loves Goosebumps and has started reading the books. She loves Slappy especially. We've been sitting down to read this one together. She'll read a couple pages out loud, then I will. She is already looking forward to reading the next one. It's great that she can enjoy something that I also did when I was growing up.

This was his first Goosebumps book and he enjoyed every moment

My 7 1/2 year old son wanted me to read something scary. I am a huge horror fan, so I couldn't read him my books (Stephen King and Anne Rice are bit too scary for his impressionable mind, I didn't want him to have nightmares). This was his first Goosebumps book and he enjoyed every moment, even the scary ones were a thrill for him. We've finished the 2nd one, "The Haunted Car' and now we're waiting on the third he chose, a story about a dog.

We bought this for our seven year old son, hes not a huge fan of reading just yet but we are trying to help that along. He really enjoyed this book and is really looking forward to the next one in the series.

Easily my favorite book devoted to his color work I've seen so far! It's almost more of a rare snapshot diary of the many B&W locations and images that fans might recognize among his more iconic images. Yet I don't mean to suggest that these color images are just sketches and have no impact on their own. This might be his coolest book in terms of dumping you right onto the streets and back alleyways of his vagabond wandering bar crawls across throughout Japan during the early to mid 1970's! As always; it's stark, immediate, and recorded on shoddy materials, yet the intimacy one feels on each page is like getting hold of a very personal and unique time machine. And each shot is printed LARGE and full bleed on the page like you could almost walk into it! Get it NOW before it's just another Japanese $$$$$$$ collectable!

A must have for any Moriyama enthusiast.

The book itself in well bound, seems like it will hold up for quite a while, despite the massive size of the book (and it is massive!). The pages are glossy and the images are printed brilliantly, and the pages fold out so you can see the entire image. This is a very good purchase and was worth the cost. I would recommend it to any fan of Daido Moriyamas work.

Excellent book - good long term strategies

I thought this was an excellent read and the overall philosophy fits very well into a conservative, low cost, long term view of investing. If you like Mr. Bogle of Vanguard, you will also like this book. Although Bernstein goes into a few concepts that are more varied and interesting to consider.

Good but not great. Lacks some key chapters. The Intelligent Asset Allocator is still his best work.

Good but not great. Bernstein discusses the extremes of equity (risk) products and government bonds (safe) products, and the importance of separating the two. Some good advice there, as well as consideration of premiums such as value, momentum, etc.

But he pays only lip service to corporate bonds, and gives no consideration at all to several important intermediate risk asset categories (emerging market bonds, developed market ex-US bonds, high yield bonds, convertible securities, preferred shares, foreign REITs, etc.) It would also have been nice if he had provided an appendix with several sample portfolio allocations for different age and risk tolerance profiles. After all the buildup in his verbiage and empirical evidence, I was quite underwhelmed that he didn't add at least a few sample index allocation profiles as starting points/roadmaps. I love Bernstein's work but this reads more like an 80% complete draft than a finished tome.

Great for followers of Dr. Bernstein and for others who feel they have mastered the basics of personal investing. Not a good first investment book or one for readers not interested in following a bit of college level math and statistics.

Katherine Kurtz has been writing fantasy novels for well over three decades. Slightly dated but still enjoyable launching book for the Deryni universe.

This book was the first one Kurtz wrote nearly 40 years ago, and there are moments when the book does reflect that. There is usage of "magical" terminology and actions (like poetic spells) that aren't used in her subsequently written books.

Plot: The young heir to the kingdom of Gwynedd (an alternate universe equivalent to Britain, essentially), Prince Kelson, watches helplessly as his father dies of an apparent heart attack during a hunting expedition. In short order a rival heir to Kelson's throne (from a usurping dynasty who'd ruled Gwynedd centuries earlier) threatens his life and those of the rest of his family, the Church (and Kelson's mother) want his father's best friend killed because of his magical heritage, and Kelson comes to realize some surprising things about his own heritage.

This book and its two sequels in this trilogy (Deryni Checkmate and Deryni Rising) were both re-released a few years ago with some minor edits and plot adjustments to reflect later-written books.

25 years later... still a strong (if imperfect) novel!

You know the experience of going back to something you loved as an adolescent and discovering it to be completely execrable garbage?

Fortunately, that's not the case with Deryni Rising.

It's not without flaws, however. One reviewer gives it a one star review for the absolute good / absolute evil characters, and I can't dispute the criticism. Nuance of motive is not, at least in this first volume, in Kurtz' repertoire.

In fact, breaking things down stylistically, there is a lot to be disappointed in with this novel, so it is a testament to the power of her narrative that it is, in fact, a real page turner.

Kelson Haldane's father, the King, is killed in the prologue, and the subsequent novel covers the days to Kelson's coronation. Surrounded by treachery, ignorance, and general political scheming, there's a lot that can go wrong. It doesn't help that Kelson's most trusted advisor, Alaric Morgan, is a half-breed member of an almost-outlawed race with magic powers, and that virtually everyone is working on Morgan's downfall. This includes Kelson's mother, who is the most viciously anti-Deryni activist in the book. And, of course there is a usurper in the wings, herself a full Deryni sorceress, sowing discord and preparing for the restoration of a Deryni evil empire.

Reading this you can see influences into both Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.

Kurtz' style improves over the course of subsequent books: this is not just a first novel, it is a first novel sold-before-written, dashed off in a time when the bar for quality fiction in fantasy was non-existent.

Some things to gloss over: one dimensional characters. Frustrating and willful ignorance. Characters consistently jumping to untenable conclusions. Deus ex Machina solutions. Over-the-top descriptions (everyone is apparently astoundingly good looking in this world).

Some things to notice: great descriptions of ecclesiastical protocol. Beautiful descriptions of clothing. Gradual revelation of deeper mystery.

And yet, it is immensely readable. Gripping. Fun. And sets the stage very well for the books that follow.

A Classic from the 70s that doesn't hold up

Kurtz' Deryni novels were considered top notch when they were written in the 70s, but they haven't aged well. The characters are thinly drawn and rely heavily on stereotypes, with motives thinly sketched, and character development, such as it is, told rather than shown. The main characters never truly seem to be in danger, because every time they are, one of them suddenly manifests new magical abilities that save the day. Even the climactic duel at the end is resolved with this sort of deus ex machina device. It's her first novel, and it shows.

Kurtz claims to have done graduate work in history, but wouldn't know it from the novel. Ostensibly set in a high medieval society, the world is actually a pastiche of generic fantasy Europe with details drawn from as late as the 20th century (such as overstuffed chairs and crystal decanters). Details like that were acceptable when fantasy literature was still maturing, but today it reads like second-rate young adult literature.

Around 1962 when I was first playing guitar, I had this book. Somehow I misplaced it. For 20 years I've been keeping my eyes open, and here it is! If you are a beginning strummer, or wish to get a glimpse of America in the early half of the 20th century, this book is awesome. Ten chords will get you thru the whole book, and you'll have a hoot doing it. If you are trying to teach your youngster to play guitar (or uke), this provides a ton of well known songs on which to practice, and then sing and play like they didn't know they could. I wish I'd had it in the window of opportunity for my grandkids.

Great Compact Songbook

This songbook of Pete Seeger songs is great. It comes complete with guitar chords, stories and illustrations of each song. The size is compact, smaller than standard songbooks so naturally the print is smaller too. If the size is not an issue and you like a good selection of Pete Seeger songs, you'll be pleased. The book fits nicely in my guitar case. The guitar chords include diagrams though most of the chords are basic and easy.

rushed and slaped this one together

This Guide has so many mistakes in it, it suprises me that the proof reader was from a major publisher. The priciples are good
but the answers to the questions are in part not correct, especially the answer keys. I think I would pass as the only way you will get anything out of this book is to find the answer key ansewers and circle them, and then you study the answers and the questions.

Caution: be sure that the answer key answers are correct, found quite a few rediculous mistakes.

Genius compendium book

This book is well organized and well written. It has a structure. Every genius principle is described in a few points: general description, benefits and how to apply the principle.
The reader know what to expect and it makes the reading experience smooth.

I also vote for the principles the author included in the book. I did my own study about success and, no surprise here, all of the success principles are also the principles geniuses live in accordance with. Perseverance, constant self-education, taking care of one's health, the importance of human connections, inhuman consistency (habits!) and self-actualization were the things I discovered to be of importance if you want to achieve success. Robledo named them and several others, that could be included in above six as well.

What I loved about this book was the emphasis on hard work and long-term approach.
According to Robledo genius is more about hard work and much less about the spark of talent than most of us think. I recommend especially the chapter about intuition that indirectly states you need to put a crazy load of work first, before your intuition could be even born. That was perfect!

The only drawback I see in "The Secret Principles of Genius" is the lack of personal touch that I so highly value in self-published works. However, with this kind of book, that is a roundup of principles, it was impossible to put any personal experience into it, especially that Robledo doesn't pretend to be a genius himself.
The author skillfully compensate for that adding a lot of examples from geniuses' lives which makes the reader to learn by absorbing the human stories, rather than a dry knowledge.

Robledo has done a phenomenal job in documenting several secret principles, that the high achievers have honed in on and use regularly, for their seemingly unnatural achievements. What's even more exciting is that these personalities are from different eras, cultures, professions and locations. However, they all have a common theme or let's call it a Genius Trait in them, that Mr. Robeldo has revealed, that is now available to us at our fingertips that can be acted upon to achieve our dreams.

After reading this book, you may think, but I knew some of this already, nothing new here. However, the author spells out a step by step action format that would bind all the secret principles together to bring out the real You. This where the author has done a tremendous job. This is a must read for all students, high school, university, ongoing education etc. It would be ovewhelming to attempt to apply all of them at once, but once you begin with a few principles, you will be well on your path. Happy reading!!!

Good book with good advice on how to apply your intellect more efficiently and in ways you may not have thought of before. The author obviously put in a lot of thought and time into researching this topic and created a good work on the subject. Each section should be read and thought about before moving on in order to let the message sink in. This book will not turn you into Matt Damon in "Good Will Hunting", or Bradley Cooper in "Limitless", but if you are a person of average intellect it can help show you some ways to improve your thinking and learning abilities.

About the Author

Christopher M. Norris, PhD, is a physiotherapist and director of Norris Associates, which operates two private clinics in northwestern England that specialize in exercise therapy for back rehabilitation. Norris is also a consultant to several Blue Chip industries in northwestern England providing on-site physiotherapy services, on-site holistic therapy, training in ergonomics, and training in manual handling.

In addition to more than 30 years of clinical experience, Norris has served as a postgraduate lecturer in the United Kingdom and Europe and as an external examiner and visiting lecturer for several universities in the United Kingdom. He serves on the board of directors of the International Sports and Spine Society and on the international advisory board (IAB) for the Journal of Bodywork Movement Therapies. He is a former IAB member of Physical Therapy in Sport and Sport Exercise and Injury.

Norris resides in Congleton in the Cheshire region of England. In his free time he enjoys coaching and practicing ju jitsu, running in the Cheshire countryside, and hill walking in the Peak National Park.

Execellent book, written mostly for a health practitioner

This is a great book by a really good author. He is very grounded in science and there are a lot of different exercises. I am someone who is working to overcome back pain and about 50% of this book is too technical for me. Like some other authors talk about, one of the key points in the book is the some back pain is caused by poor posture and alignment of the pelvis. This is central to Pilates as well. I have found this to be true, but correcting it is the tricky part.

Highly recommended!

This is a really good book for anyone in the personal training or health industry. I'm a Pilates instructor and the book Muscles: Testing and Function by Kendall et. al. is recommended reading to better understand posture and the way muscle tension affects the body. This book provides a lot of information that is found in Kendall's book, but is much easier to read! It explains how incorrect posture and muscle tightness can lead to back issues. It explains the core muscles and their importance. It provides instructions and illustrations on flexibility testing and strengthening exercises. I highly recommend this book!
